All Natural Mattress: Sleep Better, Feel Better!
An all natural mattress is one of the best investments in your health, but buyer beware of what is really natural and non toxic when you begin to look for a 100% natural mattress.
If you aren't getting a good night's sleep, and are unable to pinpoint exactly why you can't get any restful shut eye at night, what you're sleeping on might be the culprit.
Especially if you have known allergies or chemical sensitivities, you
may be irritated at night by unknown materials that are in your
current mattress.
Even if you are sleeping on a "healthy" mattress as advertised
by various companies, you may actually be sleeping on
unhealthy fibers that are emitting chemical vapors from the
various synthetic materials used to manufacture it. It pays off in
good health to know about and properly select the right mattress
What You Should Know
Did you know that just because a mattress is labeled as "organic" does not necessarily mean that it is free from harmful chemicals? That's right. The labeling term is often used as a marketing technique to attract consumers who really want to select natural or chemical free mattresses.
Actually, "organic" is typically only accurately used in the food production industry rather than for other products, unless the product is actually grown and processed from a totally natural,
chemical free environment.
The certified organic label is most often awarded to food products and even that means the food itself must be at least 70% organically grown and produced. Only the Department of Agriculture can certify organic cotton or wool used for mattresses that is free from chemicals. If looking for a natural latex mattress or an organic cotton mattress for example, you must also be sure to look for a very few distributors that carry truly non toxic cotton or latex bedding.
An all natural mattress will not have the typical chemicals that is generally laced throughout the fibers of a standard mattress. Toxins such as flame retardants, insect repellant and petrochemicals are commonly used by the most reputable companies to produce conventional mattresses.
Issues such as the addition of flame retardants is regulated by the government and companies of standard bedding must meet specifications for their product unless they are a manufacturer of openly labeled organic or all natural bedding products.
Be sure that you know what to look for, because there are plenty of marketing techniques targeted at consumers that can result in the purchase of a mattress that is really not all natural or chemical free. In order to choose a truly natural mattress, here's a few tips that may help you:
- Try to find a reputable online store or local company in your area - You'd be surprised at how many salespersons either don't know what is natural or will try to convince you that their product is safe and organic. Be sure to do your homework by checking out any particular organic mattress that appeals to you.
- Ask about certified organic or all natural materials used in the bedding - Make sure that it is 100% latex or certified organic cotton or wool layers as well as ticking or core material used.
- No petroleum based materials - Did you know that the highly popular memory foam that is used in some of the most expensive mattresses is produced from petro chemicals? Also, some "natural latex" beds use combination latex and foam materials, so they are marketed as "all natural" but are really just a hybrid of the two materials. So, beware.
- Price is an indicator - Did you know that 100% natural mattresses are more expensive than conventional bedding? Anyone that is interested in green mattresses and eco bedding accessories will find that organically grown materials are always more expensive than their synthetic counterparts. Also, the process used to design and produce natural bedding is generally more tedious, hence the elevated cost for this type of luxury bedding.
But remember, you will spend at least a third of your life in bed, so you may want to make a good investment in your health by selecting an all natural mattress.
