Colored Down Comforters: What You Really Should Know
Colored down comforters offer both advantages and disadvantages, depending on your purpose for this type of bedding. Here's what you should know!
Colored down comforters are one piece comforters that are encased with a colored, rather than a white outer covering. Some people prefer colored down filled comforters that match their current bedroom decor. There are advantages and disadvantages to purchasing this type of bedding, depending on your purpose.

Benefits

  • Inexpensive - This type of down comforter is much less expensive than a traditional white covered down comforter. The covers and fill fibers are constructed from materials that are cheaper at the manufacturing stage, and the savings are then passed on to consumers.

  • One stop solution - Colored down comforters are one piece bedding items that are already made to match whatever color you choose for your bedroom. You can find anything from solid colors to various prints. You don't have to purchase a separate duvet cover to cover your bedding. Simply select your preferred colored comforter and you're good to go!

Disadvantages

  • Poor quality - Comforters that are covered with colored fabric are generally made with very cheap products and offer a less expensive alternative to a better quality goose down comforter. Covers are usually blended fabrics, such as cotton and polyester,  rather than the best down comforter covers that are made with 100% cotton. Also, the fill material is almost never truely goose down, but a combination of feathers and down, which make for a less durable, comfortable product.

  • Not very durable - Since this type of comforter is made from lesser quality materials, obviously, a colored down comforter is not as durable for an extended length of time. The fill tends to easily compress, and can get quite lumpy over time. The cover is usually not made with a very high thread count, which allows prickly quills to periodicly push their way out of the encasement.

  • Not washable - If you're looking for a washable down comforter, then you don't want to choose a colored one! The cover material may not hold up to normal washing and the color may 'bleed' if not washed in cold water. Also, since the fill is usually a combination of feathers and down, it will not hold up to proper drying. Further, the seam designs are often not high quality baffling, which makes it easy for the fill to shift during washing. It's best to dry clean this type of bedding.

There are instances when you may need to choose a colored comforter for specific reasons. On the other hand, if you're looking for a quality down bedding investment that offers both comfort and supreme functionality, frankly, you probably want to stay away from colored down comforters!
