Featherbed covers are very important to use on any feather bed that you choose since you want to protect your investment as much as possible. In fact, covers for feather beds really don't cost that much considering the important role they play in protecting your bedding investment.

One rule of thumb about these types of bed is to never, ever use them before they are adequately covered. However, there are a variety of featherbed covers from which to choose, so how do you know which one is best for your this type of bed?

There are several types from which to choose that come in various sizes and designs that are made to fit any type of bed you have. Here is a brief guide that can help you choose the right mattress cover.

Size

Not only can you find covers that fit twin, full, queen, king or other speciality sizes, you can also find bed covers that fit various thicknesses. When searching for the right bedding product, be sure to look for the right thickness. The thickness level will also help you determine what design will work best for your bed.

Design

There are various designs available such as zippered mattress encasements, fitted mattress covers or simple flat bed protectors.

  • Zippered mattress encasements - This type of cover is the most beneficial in protecting any featherbed. It is made to fit various sizes and is designed with a zipper so that you can completely encase the mattress. This design is the best in keeping dust mites and other stains. Most of these are made from natural or organic cotton and tightly woven to resist dust mites and moisture. This particular design is generally more expensive that other covers, but well worth the extra protection. It is also washable. Some mattress encasements are made from vinyl in case you need to ensure that absolutely no moisture or dirt particles touch your sleep unit.

  • Fitted covers - A fitted cover is beneficial because it fits just like a sheet around the typical mattress. Be sure to choose the correct dimensions to fit your bed. You can also find this particular cover in various materials including cotton, polyester or wool. Fitted mattress covers are moderately priced and are easy to find for just about any size bed. They can also be washed at home.

  • Sheet protectors - A flat sheet protector is simple and inexpensive. It is usually made more like a mattress pad with straps that slip around each corner of a featherbed. You can find this bedding item made from cotton, polyester, and wool. Some flat protectors also offer velcro or button attachments as well. This type of mattress protector is the least effective in protecting against moisture and dust mites since it can slip while sleeping and does not provide overall coverage of your bed. Flat mattress protectors can be easily washed in your washing machine at home.

Choosing a good mattress cover is important to protect your goose down bedding investment. The quality level you choose, of course, will be determined by your budget. If you're looking for the best protection, however, most consumers generally agree that an organic cotton zippered featherbed cover is the best choice.
